cheap and worth it… and going wireless

Monday, November 17th, 2008

OK. I probably wouldn’t have said the same thing about this router yesterday. For starters, I still happen to be a Mac noob (Fitzwilliam, my black MacBook just came in a little over a month ago, and although I have had a bit of experience with Macs during the time I spent with Kalasag, I am still, relatively, a Mac noob), plus I have no idea whatsoever (maybe a little. Pea little.) about routers. Honestly. Damn. I should have listened to those Cisco Networking classes we had back in high school.

Anyway. Since budget constraints allow little space for purchasing a router such as an AirPort Extreme, let alone a 1T Time Capsule, my sister and I decided that it is best to settle for a cheap router. For now. I swear, if we ever get the chance, we’ll upgrade. Can you ever blame us for being so desperately poor!?!?!?! Insanity and randomness aside, my sister and I purchased an Encore (according to CD-R King employees, “EN-KOR”. As far as I know, it’s supposed to be pronounced as “AHN-KOR,” right?) router (ENHWI-G2 Model) yesterday. Then begins the sad story.

Since I’m not exactly in the mood to tell long sad stories right now (and just remembering the story makes my stomach churn so hard with anger, I swear you’ll start smelling butter), so to make the long sad story short (and not sound too sad), I spent almost 5 hours trying to configure a router using a user manual which includes a part labeled “Easy Steps on How to Manage YOU Local Area Connection.” Good Grief.

The solution was pretty easy though. We bought the router at Gaisano South, since they were the only branch who had supplies of the router. Unfortunately, people there lack the technical skills needed to fix my sad story. So I went to SM and had the router configured there. I explained to the guy over and over again what went wrong with my attempt yesterday. He didn’t seem to understand, and I think he was treating me like I was some sort of idiot. Typical. I’m actually used to it now. The first time they treated me like that was when they sold me a lemon flash drive (when I came back for some tech support, they acted as if it were my fault I accepted the flash drive. Sheesh!). I erupted like a volcano then, and I guess once is enough. Anyway, the important thing is that they got it fixed. Upon reaching home, I simply changed the network name and password. Voila! I’m now connected, wireless! Anyway, there still seems to be a bit of a problem with the connection, ISP wise. I’ll wait and see what happens.

Now, regarding other things wireless. Around a month ago, my sister won a “Home Theatre in a Box” entertainment system at a raffle promo by SM during those notorious 3-day sales that leave people decapitated in every way possible. Guess who’s using it the most right now? Yeah, baby! The best thing about the system is that it has this Bluetooth connectivity, so I can just connect it to Fitz (my black MB), and play my music WITHOUT WIRES!

I guess I’ve shared enough for today. Just wanted everyone who still care to know that I am unfortunately alive and kicking, and trying my best to be happy. And of course, hoping my brain becomes wireless, too. It’s become too tangled, I don’t even know where to begin.
